A Study on the Level of Awareness of Mechanical Engineering Diploma Students Regarding Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) at Politeknik Melaka
Abstract
Objective: This study aims to measure the level of safety awareness among Mechanical Engineering Diploma (DKM) students regarding occupational safety and health at Politeknik Melaka (PMK). Method: The study successfully gathered 150 respondents for the survey, consisting solely of DKM students and excluding students from other courses. The study was conducted among students from semester 1 to semester 5, who were exposed to equipment, environments, and events that could pose risks of injury. These students had also been exposed to the Occupational Safety and Health subject during their first semester. In conducting the survey, the researcher utilized questionnaires as the primary source and instrument for data collection. Results: The obtained data were analyzed using Statistical Packagefor the Social Sciences - Version 17.0 (SPSS 17.0) software, employing frequency percentages, means, and standard deviations. Several factors were examined in this study, including the environment, training, procedures, and policies.The results of the study indicate that DKM students have a high level of awareness, as evidenced by an overall minimum score exceeding 3.68. Additionally, training was found to be the most influential factor, with 88% ofrespondents recording high minimum scores. The second factor was procedures, with 87.4% of respondents recording high minimum scores. The third factor was the environment, with 87.4% of respondents recording high minimum scores. The fourth factor was policies, with 86% of respondents recording high minimum scores. Conclusion: In summary, it is found that safety practices in the PMK area can be enhanced through actions and cooperation among the involved parties, such as unit leaders or lecturers and by utilizing more effective management. Additionally, studentsshould also adhere to the established regulations. Through collaboration and a sense of responsibility from all DKMstudents involved, safety practices in the PMK area can be continuously improved over time.
